Legendary Worlds: Adult Coloring Book – A Review

Legendary Worlds: Adult Coloring Book is published by Colorworth Publishing and was very kindly sent to me by Witek and Carrie, two of the illustrators. This is their second instalment after mega success with their first title Legendary Landscapes, reviewed by me HERE. This book is exactly the same size and format and is HUGE at 30cm square, it’s paperback with a sturdy but bendy card cover and it’s a really weighty book containing 96 pages, including 85 double-sided images. The paper is bright white with a little tooth and the spine is glue-bound meaning a little of each image is lost in to the spine because they are borderless. The paper is medium thickness and didn’t bleed with water-based pens but did shadow a little so be careful and always test in an inconspicuous area, pencils were really easy to use in this book and I was able to get lots of layers and blend really well so it was a pleasure to colour for my review. The book contains a mixture of single-page and double-page spreads and the images are illustrated by seven different artists (5 are the same as before and 2 are new) so they contain a range of styles but these are all very complementary with each other so there is great cohesion within the book. A huge variety of landscapes and worlds are illustrated in this book with some being more realistic and most being fantastical. The images take you from shell palaces to fairy forests, crystal towers to junkyards, Toronto to Dubrovnik, magical worlds to mythical creatures, underwater to outer space and so much more! Everything you can think of is covered in this book and the variety is astounding! Small versions of each image are shown at the back of the book along with the name of that piece and which artist illustrated it, there are also biographies of each artist so that you can find out more about each one and look up more of their work if you wish.

In terms of mental health, this book is fantastic because it’s so natural and I find images of nature the most calming to colour, even though the majority of these images aren’t of realistic places. The scenery is beautifully illustrated and really draws you in and takes you to another place which is ideal for those of us who are housebound and long to be able to escape, this book takes you into a world of dreams and imagination from castles in the sky to a land of cake with a chocolate river and citrus sky, and you encounter all manner of wonderful creatures and inhabitants from love-struck stag beetles to fairies, unicorns to dragons, dinosaurs to a space octopus amongst other more well-known animals including a moose, hummingbirds, fish and a whole host of other underwater creatures. This book offers hours and hours of escapism and distraction and is sure to calm you down and help you zone out of life’s stresses and worries and restore your inner peace. The line thickness varies throughout from spindly thin to medium and the line thickness varies throughout the book and each image with some having a range of line thicknesses to show different details. Because the images are illustrated by a number of artists, there is quite a variance in style though they feel very cohesive despite this. The intricacy and detail levels vary a huge amount throughout the book from pictures with large, open spaces where you can really hone your blending and shading skills with your pencils, to images with lots of small, intricate details that you can break out your fineliners or super sharp pencils to get into all of the nooks and crannies. These images are huge so you will need fairly good concentration but they take days rather than hours to colour so you can easily split it into smaller chunks if you’re having a bad day and colour just one mushroom, dragon, or flying turtle and go back to it later or another day, when you’re feeling a bit better. The scenic imagery lends itself really well to helping reduce symptoms of mental illness and it’s sure to calm you down, keep you distracted and focused, and would be absolutely ideal for practising mindfulness whilst colouring because it’s so easy to zone out and get lost into the world you’re colouring.

I would highly recommend this book to those of you who like colouring natural things and landscapes. This is a beautiful book, brilliantly executed and while it’s quite expensive to get in the UK because the producers are Canadian, it’s really worth the extra cost because this will truly give you months of colouring fun and is sure to improve your colouring and blending skills whilst helping your mental health. If you’re wanting to start practising mindfulness then this is the book for you, it’s perfect for focusing on your breathing and staying in the here and now within the beautiful landscape you’re colouring.

If you’d like to purchase a copy of the book it’s not available on Amazon in the UK but it can be found here:

  4. My imaginary World would be that in which human species would respect domestic and wild animals, not
use them for greed, slavery or cruel desires. Finally, a world in which children would learn this since the moment they are born.

  5. My ideal imaginary world has always been Narnia, where you unexpectedly tumble into it, meet interesting “people:, stay awhile, and unexpectedly tumble back out without any “real” time having passed. It’s interesting to me at least that this imaginary world of mine is in gray and white, a sweet and calm retreat from the vibrant, colorful ADD world I reside in in real life.

As I am writing this, I realize that yesterday I added a package of fineliner pens in five shades of gray-to-black to my Amazon basket. It will be interesting to color in grayscale when I’m ADDanxious–I imagine that it will be a totally new experience.

  6. My imaginary world would b one of lush forests, with giant trees and fantastical creatures. Jeweled insects would live amount the strange and colorful plants. The odd, friendly, magical animals would live and play in the treetops of giant trees and along the forest floor. Not to mention the clans of centaurs who roam the wide plains wild and free as the herds of American mustangs once did all those years ago. Mermaids would live along the coast in the reefs more rich and beautiful than the Great Barrier ever thought about being. The elves and fae would live all over the land in their fantastical cities with sprawling palaces and high towered castles. Protecting the land from any negative thing. Dragons would fly through the sky lighting up the night with their enchanting dances. All would live in harmony all connected to the magic of the land.

  7. I would imagine a world with no big towns in it but little villages built in harmony with the natural landscape, surrounded by mountains and peaks, with calm lakes close to them… A kind of Hobbiton, but with a different architecture, more inspired by the ancient Greece, with a bunch of mythical creatures fooling around like hydras and flying dragons, nymphs and elves, gigantic – but friendly – lions and sabretooth tigers, and a lot of other strange and amazing creatures. Paths would lead down to the sea, between pines and olive trees, and there would be at dusk a smell of jasmine filling the air.
But above all, it would be a place where people would speak to each other, exchange ideas without aggressivity, have no contempt or fear for differences and respect nature. My own little utopia… 😉

  18. For me, being born on the Summer Solstice, it has always given me a minds eye to a place that is truly at peace. Where Fairies rule and the Animal Kingdoms live in harmony. The large flowing limbs of trees cascading from the tallest and majestic trees that provide not only home for the Fair Folk but for any human guest that is privileged enough to enter their realm. The soft carpet of the earth beneath your feet and a hammock strung between to beautiful trees that would allow you to have the sight of the stars and the heavens as your never ending ceiling. Your lulled to sleep by the music of the crickets and the yawns of the tiger cubs in the distance. You hear the purring of the adult tigers as they also settle in for the night among the mountains that they call home. Families of birds are calling one another to the canopies of the trees. You know the tree nymphs are just starting to begin their evening of mischief where the moon shines down over the beautiful hills allowing the foliage to now come to life. ( I better stop here or this could be the longest post ever..lol) Sounds corny I know but a magical place for me exists in this Solstice girls heart and brings me peace when I can travel there. Thanks for indulging my secret place. 🙂

Finally please let me thank you for creating a place of such information and beautiful discovery. For years I colored with my girls, always searching the internet for wonderful pictures that would not only give me a break from the reality of my world but help to silence the pains of the daily struggles with my disabilities. Please don’t get me wrong I am grateful for my family and what I can provide, but being a single disabled mother of three amazing girls sometimes I just needed a place to find a break and for me that was “coloring”. Not until years later did I discover that there were others out there that did the same as me, but being home nearly all the time it was just in the recent weeks I literally fell into this community. I have been so inspired and can’t wait to be able to experience the style of “Book Coloring Therapy” that I have seen within this community. I have you on all three of my social media outlets that I am a part of including your site here. Thank you for the opportunity to enter your give a way and I look forward to your next newsletter, not to mention exploring the great details you have provided here!

Everyone would live in harmony with all having housing, food, good air to breathe, and clean water to drink. There would be enough green forests, water, and fauna, for the world to sustain itself and its inhabitants. There would be enough opportunities for everyone to live their passion and not worry about illness, wages, or the everyday issues that are common in the real world. Humans would get along with animals. Animals would not be caged, but would allowed to live in their natural habitat without human interference. I imagine rainbows to brighten the day’s beginning, perfect weather during the day with temperatures for comfort, and in the evenings enough stars to brighten the night. This is how I imagine my world to be!
